"Chemistry-In-Theatre: Insufficiency, Phallacy or Both?"          An Evening in Honor of Carl Djerassi

5/5/2015

In 2014 the University of Innsbruck awarded chemist, writer and "mother of the pill", Carl Djerassi a honorary doctorate and invited the renowned scientist to Innsbruck for 2015 in order to organize the performance of one of his theater plays at the Tiroler Landestheater in his presence. However, Carl Djerassi who was born in 1923 as a child of Jewish parents in Vienna passed away on January 30, 2015 in San Francisco. Nevertheless, the University of Innsbruck decided to organize this evening in commemoration of Prof. Djerassi. AIANI was put in charge in organizing this event.

An interesting program, that included a scientific presentation and a performance at the Tiroler Landestheater was put together. Prof. Gabriele Werner-Felmayer from the Innsbruck Medical University and Head of the Austrian unit of "Ethucation - Network of Bioethics in Education and Training" gave a lecture on the topic "Fragmentation - Scenarios of technologically controlled reproduction ". Starting from Carl Djerassi's article "Immaculate Conception" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung, No. 221, 2014) she presented different scenarios of human reproduction in the biotech era.

Prof. Werner-Felmayer recalled in her speech that, Carl Djerassi has not only contributed essentially to the development of today's technologies in the field of reproduction, but that he also chose this subject repeatedly for his literary work. Following the lecture, Carl Djerassi’s play "Chemistry in theater. Insufficiency, Phallacy or Both?” was performed by Antje Weiser, Gerhard Kasal, Jan Schreiber and Timo Senff in the Kammerspiele of the Tiroler Landestheater.
