Exploring Cryptocurrencies: Insights from Aviv Yaish, MSc, AIANI Fellow in February/ March 2023

2/13/2023

In February and March 2023, Prof. Rainer Böhme and Prof. Svetlana Abramova of the University of Innsbruck hosted Aviv Yaish, MSc. from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Their collaboration focused on the economic aspects of cryptocurrencies, particularly governance protocols. These protocols aim to enable decentralized decision-making through voting using "governance tokens." During the visit, the researchers collected empirical data and are now continuing their collaboration remotely, focusing on theoretical aspects.

As part of his visit, Aviv Yaish delivered a public lecture titled "Uncle Maker: (Time)Stamping Out The Competition" on March 9th. The lecture explored the security implications of economic incentives within cryptocurrencies, with a focus on miners and the Ethereum 1.0 network. Yaish presented an economically motivated attack that enables miners to earn excess profits, providing valuable insights into the dynamics of cryptocurrency ecosystems.

The visit proved fruitful in unraveling the complexity of cryptocurrency economics. Prof. Böhme, Prof. Abramova, and Mr. Yaish's collaboration has yielded empirical data and new theoretical perspectives. Their ongoing research on governance protocols and the economic dynamics of cryptocurrencies contributes to our understanding of this rapidly evolving field.

As their collaboration continues, these researchers will delve deeper into theoretical aspects, expanding our knowledge of governance protocols and their implications. Their efforts shed light on the fascinating world of decentralized finance and its potential impact on our socio-economic landscape.

Aviv Yaish's visit, facilitated by Prof. Böhme and Prof. Abramova, has sparked interdisciplinary discussions and groundbreaking research in cryptocurrency economics. Their work promises to provide valuable insights into this digital frontier as cryptocurrencies captivate the global community.
